An award-winning business product that is the opposite of inclusion (buttondown.email)
On paper, “Q.workntine” is the kind of innovative product people fawn over, and investors throw money at without digging into it too deeply. It won the DNA Paris design award for “responsible design.” I guess that means the DNA Paris design award rules don’t consider the needs of people with disabilities an essential component of responsible design. SMH. Q.workntine claims to provide safety and protection within the physical workplace while maintaining the same number of employees per square meter as a traditional office system.
I'm so pretty (teawithhb.substack.com)
WOAH. That’s pretty conceited!! Perhaps you think I’m arrogant, perhaps you agree but don’t think I should say it out loud let alone put it in writing. However you feel, it is undeniable that for most woman, acknowledging their own attractiveness is akin to uttering a slur. Uncomfortable, unthinkable, because for an attractive woman to have an attractive personality she should be unaware of her attractiveness. Or at least, that’s what I have noticed. My own personal disconcertion when I see a confident woman. My instinct to judge, criticise, and then the disappointment once I notice my response and that my first instinct isn’t ‘good for her!’. But at least I am noticing. It’s the same relationship I have with myself: my default is to criticise and judge.
Accessibility Playlist (buttondown.email)
So like any good tech company, the first thing my co-workers did when we were urged to work from home (I’m based in Northern California) due to COVID-19 was to set up a special Slack channel. Someone called it the WFH Water Cooler, and we are using it to commiserate and stay in touch. This sense of camaraderie is super important to heavily collaborative organizations such as the one I work for.

Karl Groves wrote an amazing article this week on the ROI on Accessibility. This is a topic near and dear to my heart and one I am considering for my PhD thesis since Accessibility ROI is largely only discussed in warm and fuzzy terms about how it will help organizations “achieve their values” and “accelerate their mission” not in hard and fast terms such as the benefits of doing it and the cost of NOT doing it.

LinkedIn says 32% of hiring managers report using job auditions to screen candidates and 84% consider it an effective hiring tool.
Advice for the Aspiring Accessibility Tester / Manager (buttondown.email)
Accessibility is a great career. However, it’s almost impossible to receive a bachelor’s level college education. It is a career where familiarity is primarily expected to be picked up through self-education and experience. Strong programming, software testing, or program management background helps with the transition. If you don’t have that background, you may want to augment the suggestions below with additional courses in those areas. Having some experience in dispute resolution doesn’t hurt either. While that last comment is slightly in jest, Accessibility Managers spend a lot of time trying to influence people and resolve conflict. It’s an excellent soft skill to have.

During her bachelor’s in social work (BSW) internship placement, Carolina noticed a linguistic and cultural gap between the services rendered and her clients, which prompted her desire to step in and help. She did so by translating safety plans, discharge plans, admissions paperwork, group therapy tools, workbooks, activities, and other essential pieces of the services provided to LES. Luckily, the work that she did during her placement will transcend her time there and benefit clients for years to come.

Disabled children are killed by the Zionist Occupation of Gaza: How one Gazan mother’s tragedy has fuelled a sit-in action (disabilityvisibilityproject.com)
Samar Alkhdour is a Palestinian human rights defender and mom who has faced impossible decisions. Like any ambitious and driven human, she was looking to create a brighter future for herself and her family. In 2017, Samar got a Fullbright scholarship and thought the ticket to that brighter future would come via pursuing a Masters degree. If all had gone according to plan, Samar, her husband Mahmoud Elkahlout and their three children Jana, Sham and Elia would have traveled together to the US. Instead, Samar had to make the incredibly difficult decision of leaving Gaza to pursue her studies with her two youngest while her eldest disabled daughter Jana and her husband stayed behind in Gaza because her husband was denied exit by the Israeli authorities. In 2018, Samar’s husband was allowed to leave but was unable to secure the accessible transportation needed for Jana to get to the border with her dad so they again made the incredibly hard decision to leave Jana in Gaza and place her in the care of Samar’s in-laws. In 2019, after moving from the US to Quebec, Samar hoped to reunite with Jana in Canada.

Accessibility Retrospectives (buttondown.email)
An agile retrospective (sometimes called a post-mortem) is a gathering of interested and involved parties at the end of a sprint to review the project’s events and learn from the experience. The main difference between retrospectives and post-mortems is that post-mortems are generally held at the end of a project (which may consist of multiple sprints) whereas agile retrospectives provide insights that you can implement in the next sprint of the same project. The term “post-mortem” also seems a little ghoulish and implies the death of a project.
