DREDF Statement in Response to Senate Finance Budget Bill (dredf.org)
The Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) urges all members of the Senate to reject the proposed budget language. The Senate’s version of the budget bill results in even deeper cuts to Medicaid and Medicare than the House version of the bill, with over $1 trillion in healthcare cuts. The budget bill is cruel. It jeopardizes our nation’s well-being, targets already at risk immigrant and transgender communities, and leads to dangerous, life-threatening Medicaid and Medicare cuts that would deeply harm disabled people and older adults. DREDF calls on all members of Congress to defend the health and rights of our communities, and commit to ensuring Medicaid and Medicare continue to provide reliable healthcare, including community-based supports and services for all people in need.

Dis/abling Futures: What Ableism Stops Us Noticing * Journal of Futures Studies (jfsdigital.org)
Let’s sit absolutely still for a few minutes. In Paris at the World Futures Studies Federation’s 2023 conference, we asked attendees during our keynote on (Dis)abling futures, to sit absolutely still for a few minutes, as an experiment in ‘failure’. To be aware of the space, to try and put aside the urge to make sense of the things discussed and to just sense for a few minutes.Trying to remain absolutely immobile is impossible, so what is ongoing in that failure? Concessions were made to blinking and breathing, and it is perhaps important to note that they indeed were concessions: the audience admitting to themselves the invitation was impossible to complete fully and absolutely -and experiencing their relationship to that failure.(Dis)abled by their own bodies, presented with the limits of voluntarism, even with the accommodation of the need to breathe and blink extended, this was an encouragement for attendees to notice the ongoing processes in which they were involved. Processes that were, and are, integral to life, and over which they had no ‘control’.

I Rely On 7 Machines To Keep Me Alive (youtube.com)
26-YEAR-OLD Eden was born with a rare condition that affects roughly one in a million people. Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy (UCMD) has weakened every muscle in Eden’s body over time and she relies on 24/7 support from a team of PAs to go about her everyday life. On top of that, the condition has severely affected Eden’s breathing - so she relies on seven machines to keep her alive. From the ventilator rigged to Eden’s wheelchair which delivers oxygen through a mouthpiece, to a suction machine and a cough assist machine - with all the medical equipment on hand, Eden’s dad Rod describes their home as a “mini hospital.” And Eden is acutely aware of how critically important her devices are, as she told Truly: “I can get really anxious thinking about how reliant I am on machines. If a machine was to break at the wrong time, my life could be at risk.” However, her family have put in place safeguards, with backups in place for the most critical machines - “and in some cases there’s a backup for the backup” - and this has enabled Eden to live life to the full. She runs her own business from home and also creates content, raising awareness online around her condition. But she has faced backlash after disclosing that she was going through fertility testing to find out whether she would be able to have children in the future - receiving comments like: “If you can’t look after yourself, how do you expect to look after a child?” Nevertheless, Eden is determined to shift perceptions around young disabled people like herself and help others understand that she has “the same wants and needs” as anyone else. So as Eden hosts a TikTok Live Q&A around her desire to become a parent in the future, what will the response be and how will she handle the trolls if they come out in force?

Fashion brands see benefits in spotlighting disability inclusion (disabilityinsider.com)
When featuring models with disabilities in advertising, brands walk a fine line – how should they convey a message of inclusivity without coming across as exploitative and insensitive? The underrepresentation of people with disabilities in media adds to the challenge, as little is known about the factors influencing how different portrayals are received by consumers.
