Ableism and ChatGPT: Why People Fear It Versus Why They Should Fear It (blog.apaonline.org)
Philosophers have been criticizing the use of ChatGPT for cheating, but have not considered its potential benefits for disabled students. ChatGPT could assist millions of people with communication disabilities and difficulties. However, it could also normalize and stigmatize non-standard modes of communication, particularly for marginalized groups. The concerns regarding ChatGPT may stem from ableism and elitism in academia, but its potential benefits for disabled and disadvantaged students should not be ignored.ChatGPT is an AI tool used to produce “strong” Standard English which could marginalize non-standard vernaculars, feminine rhetoric and dysfluent communication, leading to stigmatization of marginalized groups who use them. Furthermore, ChatGPT reproduces the biases and prejudices of its training data, including racism, sexism, ableism and classism, and reinforces “commonsense” of the white, male, able-bodied majority. However, the push-back against its use in education aims to protect elitist academic standards by policing and penalizing people who break them, which is harmful to oppressed groups. Its normalization could be seen as a form of eugenics that eliminates and stigmatizes non-standard modes of communication, threatening the essential aspects of human diversity that provide individuals and communities with opportunities for expression, creativity, resourcefulness, relationships, and flourishing.

Shadow report on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the European Union (enil.eu)
The purpose of this report is to analyse how the European Union (EU) implemented the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) between 2015 and 2022. Drawing on existing empirical evidence, the report raises serious concerns about the implementation of the CRPD by the EU. While Article 19 on the right to live independently and being included in the community is the primary focus, the report illuminates how the denial of the right to live independently in the community impacts other fundamental human rights including Article 10, Right to life and Article 15, Freedom from torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.
Institutions in Europe, models of good practice? (enil.eu)
“States parties should recognize that living independently and being included in the community refers to life settings outside residential institutions of all kinds, in accordance with article 19 of the Convention. Regardless of size, purpose or characteristics, or the duration of any placement or detention, an institution can never be regarded as compliant with the Convention (UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, 2022, ‘Guidelines on deinstitutionalisation, including in emergencies’)”
