The Diversity–Innovation Paradox in Science (pnas.org)
Prior work finds a diversity paradox: Diversity breeds innovation, yet underrepresented groups that diversify organizations have less successful careers within them. Does the diversity paradox hold for scientists as well? We study this by utilizing a near-complete population of ∼1.2 million US doctoral recipients from 1977 to 2015 and following their careers into publishing and faculty positions. We use text analysis and machine learning to answer a series of questions: How do we detect scientific innovations? Are underrepresented groups more likely to generate scientific innovations? And are the innovations of underrepresented groups adopted and rewarded? Our analyses show that underrepresented groups produce higher rates of scientific novelty. However, their novel contributions are devalued and discounted: For example, novel contributions by gender and racial minorities are taken up by other scholars at lower rates than novel contributions by gender and racial majorities, and equally impactful contributions of gender and racial minorities are less likely to result in successful scientific careers than for majority groups. These results suggest there may be unwarranted reproduction of stratification in academic careers that discounts diversity’s role in innovation and partly explains the underrepresentation of some groups in academia.

My Learning Disability is the dandelion that never leaves (michellesmission.net)
When I was a child I can remember dandelions growing in our yard among all the other flowers. I would see the yellow buds of them and thought that they were a flower. I would pick a bunch of them and give them to my mom or my grandma. Little did I know that they were a weed and could make people who were allergic to them miserable. I also loved it when the gold faded to a cotton white. I would close my eyes and make a wish I exhaled the puff. I would then open my eyes and watch the particles dance in the sky sending my wishes into the world. I do not remember what I wished for them. I do remember after finding out that I had a Learning Disability wishing that I did not have one. I have often felt like having one that I was a dandelion in a field of beautiful flowers. How I longed not to be a weed but a beautiful bloom. Many people told me that once I grew up, my disability would go away. like the dandelions pop up no matter how much you pull them, so does my Learning disability. No matter how hard I wished it would go away, it has stayed.

Fighting For the Equipment We Need (newmobility.com)
There once was a time when I looked forward to getting a new wheelchair. It was thrilling to retire my used metal friend that had been scratched, spilled-on, dented and tweaked in its dutiful job of getting me around for at least five years, per insurance rules. I looked forward to finding a shimmering new metal friend with a smooth coat of paint, unbent frames, fresh springy foam, tight hinges, unstripped screws, gunkless casters and axles free of rust — a chair that actually fit my body after several years of the unavoidable shifting of flesh and bones.

Wheely-X: Peloton for Wheelchair Users? (newmobility.com)
I think that most wheelchair users would agree with me that doing at-home cardio workouts can get a little boring. No matter how I try to change it up, every workout ends up feeling the same. My favorite way to get exercise is to push outside, but the Michigan weather does not cooperate as often as I would like. Grassroots Initiatives Teaching Sign Language to Deaf Children in the Middle East (assistivetechnologyblog.com)
Heba Jamjoum, a Jordanian sign-language interpreter, noticed the scarcity of educational content available for deaf Arab children while expecting her son six years ago. In 2022, she and her husband, Mamoun Oudah, who is hearing-impaired, initiated a project named after their kids, Tameem and Reem, to address this issue. They started creating animated cartoons on YouTube to teach sign language to deaf children in the Arab world, aiming to provide accessible and engaging content for this underserved community. Their initiative, Tameem and Reem, is the first of its kind in the Arab world, attracting over 3,500 subscribers since its launch in October 2022. Heba’s husband handles animation while she manages interpretation. However, their journey hasn’t been easy; with limited resources, they faced challenges in animation, marketing, and management. Nonetheless, their goal is to expand, improve content quality, register as a company, and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to acquire publishing rights for children’s books. In the Middle East, initiatives are emerging to address the challenges faced by children with disabilities.

COVID‐19 and the impact on Alzheimer's disease pathology (onlinelibrary.wiley.com)
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly escalated into a global pandemic that primarily affects older and immunocompromised individuals due to underlying clinical conditions and suppressed immune responses. Furthermore, COVID-19 patients exhibit a spectrum of neurological symptoms, indicating that COVID-19 can affect the brain in a variety of manners. Many studies, past and recent, suggest a connection between viral infections and an increased risk of neurodegeneration, raising concerns about the neurological effects of COVID-19 and the possibility that it may contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD) onset or worsen already existing AD pathology through inflammatory processes given that both COVID-19 and AD share pathological features and risk factors. This leads us to question whether COVID-19 is a risk factor for AD and how these two conditions might influence each other. Considering the extensive reach of the COVID-19 pandemic and the devastating impact of the ongoing AD pandemic, their combined effects could have significant public health consequences worldwide.

Meeting Kathleen from Beautiful Little Souls Blog and seeing Emotion 21 perform (carlyfindlay.com.au)
Back in 2017, I was delivering regular disability awareness and access training to an organisation in Sydney. One of the parts of my training program detailed the medical model of disability – where disability is seen as a deficit, something to be eliminated or cured. I had included a news segment and article from ABC News, about the way doctors suggest termination as the only option and apologise to parents when they discover their baby will have or has Down syndrome. In my training, I also reinforced how disability is not a tragedy. One family featured in the news story was Kathleen and Andrew, who have a little girl called Elva. Elva has Down syndrome. I had followed Kathleen on social media back then and mentioned I have been using that news story in my training.
