Moving Toward the Ugly: A Politic Beyond Desirability (leavingevidence.wordpress.com)
Good afternoon, and thank you for having me. It is lovely to be here with you all. Thank you to the symposium organizers who have asked me to be here and for your hard work putting this gathering on. And thank you to ALL the folks who have made it possible for us to be here, including the people who built this building and who clean it and care for it everyday; including the people who are being violently exploited in this country and around the globe for their resources and labor so that we can exist in this air conditioned hotel with access to clean water and food, able to sit in relative safety from military attacks or the police barging in. And including and honoring native and first nations communities upon whose land we are currently on and whose colonization and genocide have also allowed us to be here. For this too, must be part of our work, for it is intimately connected to being femme.

‘I’m sick of being the problem’: Autistic mothers’ experiences of interacting with schools for their autistic children (journals.sagepub.com)
Successful partnerships between families and schools can substantially improve children’s success in and out of school. Yet parents of autistic children often report considerable challenges with their children’s education. Almost no research, however, has examined autistic parents’ own experiences. We, therefore, sought the views and experiences of autistic parents’ interactions with schools for their autistic children. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 31 autistic mothers of autistic children engaged in education in Australia. We analysed the data using reflexive thematic analysis. Autistic mothers repeatedly expressed feeling like they were in a ‘war zone’, fighting ongoing battles to gain the necessary support for their autistic child and were ‘sick of being [viewed as] the problem’. They also felt that their expertise as parents – and experiential expertise as autistic parents – was often overlooked or ignored. All of this had negative effects on their and their children’s mental health. Despite these negative experiences, autistic mothers who had experienced positive interactions with schools highlighted the importance of mutual respect in establishing and maintaining successful school partnerships and how their own determination and self-advocacy helped to foster these relationships. This research sheds light on the critical ingredients of effective home–school partnerships for autistic families.

Trump orders plan to dismantle Education Department | AP News (apnews.com)
President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order calling for the shutdown of the U.S. Education Department. His plan, expected to be announced Thursday, was disclosed by a White House official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity before an announcement. Trump has derided the agency as wasteful and polluted by liberal ideology. However, finalizing its dismantling is likely impossible without an act of Congress, which created the department in 1979. A White House fact sheet said the order would direct Secretary Linda McMahon “to take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure” of the Department of Education.

Actors and Actresses are Being Forced to Hide Their Disabilities (domevansofficial.com)
Hollywood can be cruel, especially to people who are different. We have all seen what the film portrayals and casting have done to those who are actors of color, and those who are LGBT, especially transgender, but seldom do we hear about the unjust treatment of actors with disabilities. It is happening, and it is brutal. Disabled actors are not being cast in films, and it is not because there are no talented actors. It is not because they did not do well in auditions. It is not because they cannot handle the roles. It is not because it is more expensive to have disabled actors on set. It is not because disabled people can’t work long hours. All of these are inaccurate myths that Hollywood has created, as excuses for why they are not hiring disabled actors.

Where My Heart’s At (touretteshero.com)
On Valentine’s Day I wrote about the health issues I’ve been experiencing since the start of the year. To recap, my pacemaker battery box has moved so it’s now in the wrong place, and the leads that run from the box to my heart are blocking a big vein and affecting my blood flow. All this is causing extra pain, affecting how much I can use my left arm, and making me even more tired than usual.

Many of us still have strong memories of stay-at-home orders, the sudden loss of lives and liberties, and the dramatic global shifts of that time. For persons with disabilities, the pandemic protocols led to a surprisingly rapid loss of gains they had won and the lack of disability inclusion in crisis responses contributed to sudden and significant spikes in human rights abuses and neglect.

Project MUSE - Deaf Joy: Recuperating the Present, Nuancing Potentiality, and Eating Ice Cream (muse.jhu.edu)
This commentary proposes deaf joy as a valuable mode of engagement with and between deaf people. Deaf joy is a corrective to deficit- and damage-focused narratives and research and it enables a habitable focus on the present. Foregrounding deaf joy also allows for critiques of aspirations for and research focused on normative accounts of potentiality as well as neoliberal ideas of deaf peoples' value because of what they contribute to society. These critiques are important because potentiality as a concept is often weaponized and used to invalidate deaf children's and deaf peoples' lives as lived. Drawing on research conducted at an early intervention conference, media coverage of a cochlear implant "scandal" in South Australia, and a deaf-produced film, this article argues for cultivating deaf joy that is not just a reaction to damage and loss, and that is not just focused on what deaf people can contribute to the world.
