It will take more than unpaid leave to support working carers (businessdisabilityforum.org.uk)
With the Carer’s Leave Act 2023 receiving Royal Assent, working carers will soon be entitled to one week’s unpaid leave per year for caring responsibilities. These are intended to be used for ‘foreseen’ caring responsibilities – in other words, pre-planned and subject to an employer’s approval.
New Airplane Seat Concept Folds To Accommodate Wheelchair Users And Make Flying A Lot More Accessible (assistivetechnologyblog.com)
Delta Flight Products (DFP), a subsidiary of Delta Airlines, has revealed a new airplane seat concept that allows wheelchair users to remain in their own chairs throughout a flight. This concept seamlessly and stylishly converts to and from a traditional airplane seat, with a built-in seat that folds up to accommodate a wheelchair. It also does not require any structural changes to the aircraft and can be installed into pre-existing seat track systems. This design would be a low-cost modification and the wheelchair version would likely be priced similarly to standard domestic first class seats. This new design is seen as a major step towards inclusivity and accessibility in air travel for people with disabilities, and has generated significant interest among wheelchair users. It could potentially enter commercial use within 18 months if it passes testing and is adopted by airlines. The seat was developed in collaboration with the Air4All consortium, which includes PriestmanGoode, Flying Disabled, SWS Certification, and Sunrise Medical.

Podcast Episode: People With Disabilities Are The Original Hackers (eff.org)
People with disabilities were the original hackers. The world can feel closed to them, so they often have had to be self-reliant in how they interact with society. And that creativity and ingenuity is an unappreciated resource. Henry Claypool has been an observer and champion of that resource for decades, both in government and in the nonprofit sector. He’s a national policy expert and consultant specializing in both disability policy and technology policy, particularly where they intersect. Claypool joins us to talk about motivating tech developers to involve disabled people in creating a world where people who function differently have a smooth transition into any forum and can engage with a wide variety of audiences, a seamless inclusion in the full human experience.
Call for Book Chapters: Disability and Intersectionality - Perspectives from the Global South (chr.up.ac.za)
The concept of intersectionality was first introduced by Kimberlé Crenshaw to describe how Black women experience multiple forms of oppression and discrimination that cannot be understood or addressed solely by looking at race or gender separately. However, the concept has since been expanded to include other forms of oppression and marginalization beyond race and gender, such as class, sexuality, ability, and age. Disability scholars such as Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, Kim Nielsen, Simi Linton and many others used the concept of intersectionality in demonstrating how social constructions of disability intersect with other social categories to create conditions of discrimination and marginalization. Rosemarie Garland-Thomson has argued that disability is not just a medical condition, but also a social and cultural category that intersects with other identities, to frame the experiences of persons with disabilities.

The decision on the merits in European Disability Forum (EDF) and Inclusion Europe v. France, Complaint No. 168/2018, is now public (coe.int)
In their complaint, EDF and Inclusion Europe alleged that by failing to implement measures to guarantee sufficient and effective access for persons with disabilities to social support services and facilities, including those necessary for the inclusion of children with disabilities into mainstream education, France did not respect the right of persons with disabilities to live an independent life within the community, social integration and full participation in the life of the community in violation of Article 15§3 of the revised European Social Charter. According to the complainant organisations, this situation also prevented the effective enjoyment by persons with disabilities of the right to benefit from social welfare services (Article 14§1), the right to protection from poverty and social exclusion (Article 30), the right to housing (Article 31§1 and 3) and the right to protection of health (Article 11§1).

One of those purposes is to present information to screen readers. These tags have no impact on the visual layout of a PDF. There is more to an accessible PDF file than tags, but an untagged PDF would not be considered "accessible."
