New MRI method enhances early detection of multiple sclerosis, researchers find (disabilityinsider.com)
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease that usually leads to permanent disabilities. It affects around 2.9 million people worldwide, and around 15,000 in Switzerland alone. One key feature of the disease is that it causes the patient’s own immune system to attack and destroy the myelin sheaths in the central nervous system. These protective sheaths insulate the nerve fibres, much like the plastic coating around a copper wire. Myelin sheaths ensure that electrical impulses travel quickly and efficiently from nerve cell to nerve cell. If they are damaged or become thinner, this can lead to irreversible visual, speech and coordination disorders.

Ichthyosis and digestion issues (carlyfindlay.com.au)
Something I don’t talk about much is that the type of Ichthyosis I have (Netherton’s Syndrome) is linked to digestion issues. Many people with Ichthyosis have food allergies – sometimes multiple. I’m lucky that I don’t – but I do get a reaction on my hands and lips if I touch shellfish (I’m really holding out to let shellfish go!). And most people with Harlequin Ichthyosis and Netherton’s Syndrome experience failure to thrive as babies and children – because our bodies burn so much energy renewing skin. I experienced this – I was always on the smaller side – and had a very fast metabolism until I turned 30. I still eat a lot, but am a bit more mindful as I age.

Reinstate Universal Masking at UCSF! #KeepMasksInHealthcare (actionnetwork.org)
Since last April, when the San Francisco Department of Public Health ended its requirement for universal masking in healthcare settings, the UCSF hospital system has followed suit, and only requires that healthcare staff, not patients, wear masks. The lack of universal masking is putting seniors and people with disabilities, especially those who are people of color or marginalized in other ways, at risk. In the past four weeks, over 2,000 Americans have died of Covid each week, and many more are becoming disabled with Long Covid. Because healthcare settings are so dangerous without universal masking, patients are forced to choose between essential care and preventable exposure to a virus that could disable or kill them.

3 Ways to Improve Disability-Inclusive Design in 2024 (triplepundit.com)
When I began writing about disability six years ago, it seemed the majority of disability-related media coverage and product design was centered around senior citizens. Representation has improved since then, but there is still a long way to go. The reality is that anyone can find themselves disabled at any time. People at all life stages require products and places to fit their needs. That’s the beauty of disability-inclusive design. It isn’t “just” for one group: Inclusive design can be used by and benefit all. And it can make sound business sense.

The Scarcity Illusion of Inclusion (medium.com)
I always wanted to work in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). That dream came true about four years ago when I joined Indeed. I found myself leading accessibility efforts, and due to my advocacy, the home for my team became DEI and later Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG). While I will always welcome the opportunity to contribute to DEI in future opportunities, I found my philosophy, vision, and application too progressive for the other professionals on the larger team. In particular, what I call the “scarcity illusion of inclusion” became a dominant workplace practice. In short, it is the idea that only certain populations are deserving of the outcomes of DEI, both internal to employees and external to customers, and this idea of scarcity impacts not only priorities and roadmaps, but also employee promotion and leadership. In short, it degrades and minimizes the impact of DEI generally.

Access Toolkit for Artworkers (accesstoolkit.art)
This is a practical resource for artworkers, such as curators, producers and arts administrators working independently or in galleries, museums and arts organisations. This toolkit contains practical information on how to plan, produce, and exhibit accessible art projects including information on access riders, financial planning, slow production, display, and creating an accessible workplace. This information is intended to address the access barriers faced by d/Deaf, neurodivergent, chronically ill and disabled artists, audiences and artworkers, and those who experience ableism. The information in this toolkit has been gathered from a wide range of disabled artists, curators and producers and those working in arts organisations dedicated to commissioning disabled artists. It has also been informed by the author’s own experience as a disabled curator, who has faced access barriers and ableism working in the arts. It is most relevant to working in the UK and Ireland but is applicable in a wide set of contexts. This is not an exhaustive resource but is intended to support artworkers to begin the process of addressing ableism in their practices and workplaces to ensure they are accessible for disabled artists, audiences, colleagues and themselves.

Digital Reimaginings: Printing Towards Accessibility (amam.oberlin.edu)
Digital Reimaginings takes a multimodal approach to museum learning through 3D prints of artworks along with their scans, audio descriptions, braille, and large-text labels. These interactions allow for a broader understanding and appreciation of works of art. Simultaneously, this decenters a visually dependent experience to foster an environment where visitors can connect to art through sight, sound, and touch. This exhibition seeks to take accessibility beyond ADA compliance by designing with and for individuals with disabilities. By foregrounding accessibility in all planning and decision-making—rather than as an afterthought—art can be more inclusive and engaging for all. As you explore this space and its materials, how does your experience with art change through the supplemental use of technology and tactile learning materials?

Medical Gaslighting as a Source of Clinician-Associated Trauma (chronicpainpartners.com)
As previously reported, clinician-associated trauma (CAT) is a new term used to describe the trauma created by repeated, negative clinical interactions. It was coined as a result of the study reported in “Clinician-associated traumatization from difficult medical encounters: Results from a qualitative interview study on the Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes” by Colin M.E. Halverson, Heather L. Penwell, and Clair A. Francomano. This is a distinction from the traditional definition of medical trauma which relies on one major traumatizing incident (or a series of incidents confined to a short period of time) as the basis for applying the or any related diagnosis. While the study on CAT described many incidents of patients being hurt, disregarded, and abused by clinicians, naming these different methods of traumatization can help us identify them and develop ways to fight them. This article will cover medical gaslighting, while implicit and explicit bias, various imbalances between patients and clinicians, language use, and more will be discussed in future articles.
