The Autists: Women on the Spectrum (charterbookstore.com)
An incisive and deeply candid account that explores autistic women in culture, myth, and society through the prism of the author's own diagnosis. Until the 1980s, autism was regarded as a condition found mostly in boys. Even in our time, autistic girls and women have largely remained undiagnosed. When portrayed in popular culture, women on the spectrum often appear simply as copies of their male counterparts -- talented and socially awkward. Yet autistic women exist, and always have. They are varied in their interests and in their experiences. Autism may be relatively new as a term and a diagnosis, but not as a way of being and functioning in the world. It has always been part of the human condition. So who are these women, and what does it mean to see the world through their eyes? In The Autists, Clara T rnvall reclaims the language to describe autism and explores the autistic experience in arts and culture throughout history. From popular culture, films, and photography to literature, opera, and ballet, she dares to ask what it might mean to re-read these works through an autistic lens -- what we might discover if we allow perspectives beyond the neurotypical to take centre stage.

Captions vs. Subtitles: Leave No Viewer Behind (meryl.net)
Note: Some countries use "subtitles" instead of "captions." But in the U.S., captions and subtitles are not the same thing. The word isn't important, but the difference is important. This is about captioning shows and movies in a language different from the viewers' language. Subtitles convert spoken another language into the viewer's language. Subtitles do not show sounds or voice changes. They don't identify speakers when it's not obvious. Captions identify sounds, voice changes, speakers, and music.

What people should know BEFORE writing articles or creating products about accessibility (buttondown.com)
I read a lot of articles about accessibility, and also try out a lot of accessibility-related products. Some of them are very, very good. Others are cringe-worthy. Navigating an Inaccessible World with My Son (newmobility.com)
My 9-year-old son, River, pushes a shopping cart at Trader Joe’s, and I push my wheelchair beside him. When we get to the produce section, I grab a few apples and a bag of Persian cucumbers, and try to snag the last container of strawberries but it is out of reach. Without missing a beat, River stands on tiptoes to pick it up and place it in the cart. As we head to frozen foods, he leads the way and I watch him. “He’s getting so tall,” I think. I know it’s cliche, but kids grow up so fast.
Lessons From My Children About Frustration, Disability and Wanting it All (newmobility.com)
I am aware that a large part of the draw for my son wanting to play soccer with me is the opportunity for him to beat an adult. And not just beat. Even if I’m trying my hardest — fueled by a cup of coffee, with fresh taped gloves on my hands, and having done some warm-up pushing — Dad versus Ewan looks like a high school player getting toyed with by Lionel Messi. Or if you’re not a soccer fan … like Rocky chasing a chicken.
Safety, Boundaries and Fun as a Wheelchair-Using Parent (newmobility.com)
In 2020, when the world was shut down in the pandemic, my husband and I decided to trade in the palm trees of Palm Springs, California, for the wide-open plains of Wyoming. We could both work remotely, and we’d planned to move that summer anyway, as he’d taken a job at a new museum in the small western town of Dubois. My son, Henry, was 4. He and I had figured out how to navigate the concrete jungle that is Southern California and were thriving. But now we were trading sidewalks for dirt roads; indoor malls for national forests; chlorinated pools for rushing rivers. I knew it would take some time to find new, accessible ways to continue two of my most important jobs as a mom: keeping Henry safe and having fun with him. The learning curve was huge in the beginning. We first moved into a small log cabin. Henry slept in a loft that I couldn’t access unless I butt-scooted up the stairs. Before too long, we traded in our lofted log cabin for a log cabin with all the bedrooms on one floor. One worry solved, a million more to go.

Ami don´t go home – eine fortgesetzte Liebeserklärung (kobinet-nachrichten.org)

Professor E. Mara Green Publishes New Book on Nepali Sign Language and Natural Sign (barnard.edu)
Making Sense explores the experiential, ethical, and intellectual stakes of a world where language cannot be taken for granted. As Green explains, two forms of signing are used in Nepal: Nepali Sign Language (NSL), a conventional sign language, and what is known by NSL signers as “natural sign.” Natural sign employs conventional as well as improvisatory signs, many of which draw from semiotic relations inherent to the signers’ social and material world. Successful conversations using natural sign depend on signers’ skillful use of the resources around them and on both parties’ willingness to engage. In Making Sense, Green explores both conventional and emergent signed communication, challenging readers to consider what it means to understand and to be understood.
