The Continuation of Slavery: The Experience of Disabled Slaves during Emancipation (dsq-sds.org)
When historians explain the end of the American Civil War and the hope that the Reconstruction period proffered, they often rely on a number of pictorial images that portray the excitement and possibility that accompanied the end of slavery. One of the more popular images presents three African-American men—a farmer, a member of the urban elite, and a solider—casting "the first vote." This illustration, like many that circulated in the nineteenth century press and appear today in history textbooks, emphasizes the political opportunities engendered by the rebuilding of the nation after the Civil War. In many respects, the use of such images does make sense, as the Reconstruction period witnessed the ratification of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery; the 14th Amendment, which provided citizenship to African-Americans; and the 15th Amendment, which granted African-Americans the right to vote.

I wanna be with you everywhere (performancespacenewyork.org)
I wanna be with you everywhere, a gathering of, by, and for disabled artists, returns to Performance Space and your space—wherever you are—for an outdoor summer 2023 event. We want to be with you at Performance Space, on beaches, in transit, online. Our purpose is specifically social and our only goal is getting together, conjuring, celebrating, resting, and reveling in our means beyond ends. There may or may not be audios and visuals or impromptu performances. There won’t really be an end as this is actually just the beginning again, second round around, encore before—in continual rehearsal. We’re only here to celebrate that we’re still here and to hold space for those of us that now join from other forms. We come from traditions of healing and need in and beyond any need to be healed, made whole, or cured; we come incomplete and holographic, welcoming wounds, healers, wisdom, and fools anywhere on the body-mind-spirit-soul continuum in k/crip, chronic, incurable, incalculable, and quarantined, mad love.

Title Falling in Love With Ourselves: A Disabled Queer Black Woman’s Reflections on Disability Justice (sfbaytimes.com)
I’m proud of all my social identity markers—Black, queer, woman, and disabled. Out of all of my identities, developing disability pride was the most challenging. I didn’t always identify as disabled, although I have had chronic health challenges my entire life. As a Black queer woman whose ancestors survived by hiding parts of themselves deemed deviant, dangerous, and unlovable by a white ableist cis-heteropatriarchy, I wasn’t eager to publicly claim another marginalized identity. Queer had already come at a cost, and I had every reason to suspect that claiming disabled would be even more costly.

Back in Peru, Challenges Remain (publications.ici.umn.edu)
The Centro Ann Sullivan del Peru (CASP) is adapting to new challenges in Peru, including high levels of corruption and violence, high inflation, and heavy rainfall. The center is focusing on delivering high-quality services to families of people with disabilities and providing training classes that focus on the soft skills that employers are looking for today. CASP is also working with more than 50 companies to find real jobs that their students can do and want to do. The center is also focusing on global virtual training for families to make their work sustainable. During the pandemic, CASP changed its educational model to virtual and provided long-distance education to remote areas in Peru. The center has developed an intervention for Spanish-speaking families in New York and other cities aimed at lowering problematic behaviors and caregiver stress during COVID-19 and beyond. Sandro López, who lives with autism, has worked in competitive employment through CASP for more than 20 years and is the main breadwinner for his family. He was called back to work three days a week and is hoping to be back to full-time work soon. López has done an amazing job of helping to take care of his father, who has Alzheimer’s disease.
‘Yeah, That’s Good:’ Thomas Fights Back (publications.ici.umn.edu)
Thomas Byrne, a student from California, lost his ability to speak, sleep, move and other functions in the last few months of high school. After a lot of research, he was diagnosed with Down syndrome regression disorder (DSRD) and autoimmune encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). With much bravery, perseverance and hard work, Thomas slowly and steadily tolerated medical treatments and continues to regain his speech, motor skills and other functions that the autoimmune encephalitis took from him. Currently, he attends Mira Costa High School in a transition program, enjoying his friends and projects and continues on a path of slow, but steady improvement. His brother, John, has engaged the community in understanding more about DSRD and created The Agape Fund to support research surrounding Thomas' Regression Disorder through charitable donations. The fund has so far supported two projects focused on Down syndrome, with more than $100,000 in donations.

Accessibility and inclusivity are keywords that every kind of designer should understand and consider in the design process of any project, be it digital, physical, AR/VR, or architectural.
