Athleticism (artpapers.org)

In Many Ways to Raise a Fist (2019), I thought about “protest” and its closed fist, its opened fist, its potential. In VITRUVIAN (2022), I became that ideal image and created a kaleidoscopic reality wherein the famed sketch takes on my backstory, and I take on its. Through this process, the ideal was tested.

Spina Bifida Poems: The Foot (urevolution.com)
In 2008, during a profound residency at the Caversham Centre for Writers and Artists in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, I found myself engrossed in a unique creative venture. It was a solitary late afternoon that birthed a cycle of six spina bifida poems, each intimately connected to various parts of my body. These verses — "The Hand," "The Foot," "The Foot (the other one)," "The Shoulder," "The Foot Re-visited," and "The Wrist" — marked a pivotal milestone, not just in my literary journey, but in how I confronted and expressed my own disabled body, particularly its significant, affected parts. It was my body defined in medical terminology as having a congenital spina bifida present from birth from L5 down to S5.

My Word: ‘Wheelchair user’ is the better term (times-standard.com)
Recently a local TV news station ran a report regarding a man without permanent housing who is a wheelchair user and his journey and current situation. I appreciate that the reporter sought out a story highlighting the experience of a person in this situation who is a wheelchair user, as it typically is far more challenging and difficult for them than other people without housing. Often, shelters are not wheelchair-accessible, so facilities available to others are not available to these persons simply because of their disability. Only recently are the streets of Eureka being made accessible with curb cuts at the corners so that people who use wheelchairs can cross streets within the crosswalks like everyone else. If your only mode of transportation is your own wheelchair and public transportation, this is a big deal and when you live on the streets, this is an especially big deal.

Entrepreneurs with disability: Australian insights through a social ecology lens (tandfonline.com)
The study of people with disability who become entrepreneurs has been a neglected field of research but with a developing body of knowledge from different countries around the world over the last two decades. This paper aims to contribute to that body of knowledge through examining the journeys of entrepreneurs with disability (EwD) in Australia. It does so through a theoretical framework guided by the minority entrepreneurship literature, their lived experiences through social model understandings of disability and a social ecology framework. The research design involved interviews with 60 EwD with the findings examining their motivations, barriers, enablers, outcomes and benefits. The discussion examines the social, economic and cultural embeddedness of EwD’s journey, the paradox of their higher rates of entrepreneurship than the nondisabled and the entrepreneurial ecosystem. We conclude by outlining the contribution this study makes to disability entrepreneurship through the complexity revealed by the social ecological framework.
